Malaysia has requested evidence from Thailand to substantiate reports of armed insurgents fleeing across the border, finding refuge there, after attacks targeting security forces in the far South.
Kelantan state police chief Mohd Yusoff Mamat said on Sunday Malaysian security authorities had contacted their Thai counterparts, seeking proof that militant gunmen had fled to Malaysia after a lethal attack in Rangae district of Narathiwat of July 22.
“Every time there is a shooting incident or bomb explosion in southern Thailand, there are often allegations that the suspects flee to Malaysia. However, until now, no evidence has been presented to us to support that claim,” Mohd Yusoff told the Bernama news service.
Five paramilitary rangers were killed and six civilians injured on July 22 by six heavily armed attackers. It was one of the most horrifying attacks. The victims were out in the open on a pickup truck in a public place.
Martial law was later imposed across the southern border province and authorities began a so far fruitless hunt for the killers.
Thailand did not directly state that the insurgents had left Thailand, sneaking across the border to safety in our southern neighbour.
However, Foreign Minister Sisahak Phuangkhetkoew, who chairs a special panel on finding solutions to southern violence, has said Thailand needs cooperation from Malaysia on the matter.
National Security Council secretary-general Chatchai Bangchuad has said Malaysia could engage with insurgent groups based in Thailand.
The Malaysian state police chief said Malaysian authorities would take “immediate action” if Thai security officers pass on the information to Malaysia.
