The world's youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Malala Yousafzai, has announced her marriage in the UK.

Ms Yousafzai posted pictures of her and her new husband, Asser Malik, on their "precious day".

The couple were wed in an Islamic Nikkah ceremony in the UK city of Birmingham, where she was flown from Pakistan after being shot by a Taliban gunman in 2012.

"Asser and I tied the knot to be partners for life," the 24-year-old wrote on social media.

"We celebrated a small Nikkah ceremony at home in Birmingham with our families.

"We are excited to walk together for the journey ahead."

Pictures of the couple showed her with family members against a wall of flower petals.

Mr Malik also posted the pictures, captioned with a heart emoji.

While she shared the happy news today, Ms Yousafzai had earlier questioned the need for marriage in an interview with magazine Vogue.

"If you want to have a person in your life, why do you have to sign marriage papers? Why can't it just be a partnership?" she was quoted as saying in the magazine's July 2021 issue.

In 2017, the outspoken activist for the education of women and girls became the youngest person to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.

She's previously described Birmingham as a "second home".

Little is publicly known about her partner Asser Malik, who works for the Pakistan Cricket Board, however pictures from his Instagram account from 2019 show him attending the Cricket World Cup with a group, including Ms Yousafzai.
