Makkah, Madinah Get 24-Hour Curfew

Precautionary measures taken by residents while shopping. SPA

Saudi Arabia imposed a 24-hour curfew on Thursday in Makkah and Madinah, extending measures to combat the coronavirus, the Saudi Press Agency reported.

The Saudi interior ministry stipulated exceptions, including for essential workers and to allow residents to buy food and access medical care, SPA said.

A maximum of two people will be allowed to travel in one car at a time - the driver and the person going out to buy food or obtain medical care, it added.

The decision includes stopping all commercial activities in Makkah and Madinah apart from pharmacies, supermarkets, banks and petrol stations.

The curfew will be enforced until further notice.
