Making a Splash in downtown Lexington's Charles Young Park

A ribbon cutting in downtown Lexington Thursday created quite a splash. Cool water on a hot day was a major theme of the event.

Splash! is a large, nature-inspired, interactive water feature in Charles Young Park. It’s designed for children of all ages and abilities. Percy Thomas is chair of the Charles Young Center Advisory Board. Thomas says the splash park is a true asset to the East End community. With high temps and heat warnings, he said it was great timing for the ceremony.

“In the words of Mr. Rogers.. this is a beautiful day in this neighborhood..a wonderful day for a neighbor..would you be my neighbor…could you be my neighbor?”

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton told onlookers 80% of the funding for Splash! At Charles Young Park came from private interests. Council Member Tayna Fogle said it’s been a long time since the park has been vibrant.

Council Member James Brown said the splash park carries a message.

“This amenity was created, inspired, and had input from this neighborhood for this neighborhood. But, it is open, and we welcome everyone in the community to come enjoy it. So, let’s enjoy this together as we honor the culture and history of this neighborhood and this new amenity,” said Brown.

Splash! features educational information through interpretive signs about Brigadier General Charles Young, the Park, and the East End neighborhood. An etched timeline detailing the life of Young, the first African American to achieve the rank of Colonel in the Army, surrounds the perimeter of the splash pad.
