Making a Murderer lawyer Kathleen Zellner gives update on Steven Avery case

With the second part of Making a Murderer having debuted on Netflix earlier this year, there has been a renewed interest in Steven Avery – the subject of the documentary.

Kathleen Zellner – Avery’s lawyer since 2016 – has revealed that she’s preparing a new 22,000 page document on the case that could potentially see Avery, who was convicted for the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2007, walk free.

Speaking to OK Magazine, Zellner said that an appellate brief containing all the reasons Avery should be freed will go to the higher court next week.

“My goal is to not just to find the constitutional violation to get Steven Avery a new trial, because many people are convicted again in their second trial,” she said. ”I am trying to get the evidence to what I believe is the truth of what happened, so that there won’t BE another trial.”

Zellner said she aims to create a credible case for reasonable doubt by presenting an alternative theory that matches with the evidence her team has found.

She continued: “Someone else knows who committed this murder, and we are already getting tips about that. I believe – it’s happened on several of my cases – that someone will come forward and say ‘I know who committed the murder, they told me they committed the murder’. That’s still in play.”

Making a Murderer Part 2 put the spotlight on Zellner as she attempted to exonerate Avery. The Independent called the second series “a slow-dive through an already well-documented moment in time,” adding that episodes often feel “flabby and meandering”.
