Brandon Weeden a former first round pick in the 2012 draft is now 35 years old. The question begs to be asked: Is there another possible backup that could potentially be better than Weeden?
Well, there is one quarterback that many Houston Texans fans would be familiar with — Case Keenum, the former hometown University of Houston quarterback where he broke multiple records for the Cougars.
The former Cougar signed a two-year $36 million dollar deal with the Denver Broncos last offseason after a great season as the Minnesota Vikings quarterback. With the Vikings Keenum threw for 22 touchdowns and just seven interceptions along with 3,547 yards.
What makes Keenum an attractive replacement comes down to two things that benefits Texans backup position. One is his age; Keenum is 31 years old. That’s four years younger than the former Oklahoma State quarterback. Then the other is Keenum’s mobility.
Is Keenum more mobile than current Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson? No, but Keenum is more mobile than Weeden. Put the former undrafted quarterback with Carl Smith and Watson, and the Texans would have a nice backup that better suits with what Houston currently have and are gearing towards.
If Watson were to be injured for any amount of time, Keenum could step right in and pick up right where Watson left off. This is not to say Keenum will be a better option; it’s just to say that Texans coach Bill O’Brien wouldn’t have to make two separate playbooks one for a mobile quarterback and one for a standard in the pocket non-mobile quarterback.
This along with a cap friendly deal, Keenum and the Texans seems to make to much sense to not attempt at bringing the Houston gunslinger back to where it all started for him.
