Makeup artist warns against viral TikTok eyeliner trend

A makeup artist has warned people against a new viral TikTok trend making the rounds.

Graphic liner has taken many forms since TV show Euphoria became a key inspiration for makeup trends, but the latest one using a hot glue gun has some questioning whether ‘BeautyTok’ has taken it too far.

While usually reserved for all manner of arts and crafts, the hot glue gun is used in this new beauty ‘hack’ to create shapes using a hot glue gun to a piece of parchment paper, then embellished with eye glitter, eyeshadow or cut with scissors to create a sharper shape.

TikTok users are then applying the eyeliner 'sculpture' to their eyelids, securing it onto the face with eyelash glue. The results bring digital eyeliner to life, not unlike neon eyeliner that is typically photoshopped onto models for editorial purposes.

Vanessa, otherwise known as @cutcreaser, originally shared the trend as an extension of her original Euphoria-inspired creation back in 2019. Fans loved her creativity, with one fan commenting, "I do drag and this would be a game CHANGER". Another said, "Petition for you to do next season's makeup for Euphoria.”

Saffron Hughes, graphic makeup artist who works with FalseEyelashes.co.uk, cautioned that using glue near the eyes could cause severe irritation. She said:"Vanessa makes safety her priority by firstly mentioning to fans that they should not be using hot glue guns directly onto the face, which is super important when sharing a hack like this.

“I love the effect this hack gives but of course, glue is glue and is not formulated to come into contact with delicate skin areas such as the eyes. Ingredients in hot glue could cause irritation to the eyes or allergic contact dermatitis, especially when mixed with additional products such as glitters and chrome powders to mimic the effect of digital art."

She added: "Lash glue, which is used for adhering the 'eyeliner' to the skin was formulated for the eye area and therefore shouldn't cause irritation. Ultimately, this eyeliner trend is incredibly fun and I encourage users to err on the side of caution - wear the 3D eyeliner for minimal periods of time."
