The makers of Oscar-winning film Parasite have ridiculed Donald Trump as illiterate after he moaned about the South Korean movie scooping the Best Film award.
Film studio NEON mocked the US President, claiming he was unable to read the English subtitles after he slammed the film’s achievement.
Trump, 73, asked a campaign rally in Colorado: “How bad were the Academy Awards this year? Did you see it?”
As his supporters booed, he continued: “And the winner is... a movie from South Korea. I thought it was best foreign film.
"No, it was – did this ever happen before? What the hell was that all about?
"We got enough problems with South Korea with trade.
“On top of it, they give them best movie of the year.”
He added: “Was it good? I don’t even know.”
Film studio NEON, whose hit film directed by Bong Joon-ho also won Best International Feature Film, hit back in a tweet: “Understandable, he can’t read.”
Director Bong Joon-Ho's searing commentary on class struggle made history at the Academy Awards this month when it became the first foreign language film to win the top prize.
Parasite was a popular choice for best picture at the Oscars, winning ahead of Sam Mendes's well-fancied war epic 1917.
Bong addressed the issue of Western audiences being reluctant to watch foreign language films during his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes.
"Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films," he said after winning the best foreign film award.
