Make tonight’s final clap for carers the loudest yet, says Londoner who launched initiative

The Londoner who launched the weekly Clap for Carers initiative has called for households to make tonight’s “final” event the “loudest yet”.

Thousands of Britons have stood on their doorsteps, balconies or at windows over the past 10 weeks to applaud frontline NHS workers.

Founder Annemarie Plas, who is originally from Holland but lives in south London, said the 8pm initiative should stop while it was at its “peak” and before it became too “politicised”.

She suggested resurrecting it in 2021 to mark a year since the coronavirus outbreak.

Ms Plas said: “I am amazed at how the UK has adopted Clap For Carers and how it has managed to connect communities for one moment, every week. The messages I have had from those who care for us have been incredible and have made everything worthwhile.”
