'Make it up as they go' - Pundits slam Phil Foden penalty decision in Man City vs Southampton

Sky Sports pundits were left scratching their heads over the decision not to award Manchester City a penalty in the first half of their Premier League clash with Southampton.

Referee Jonathan Moss allowed play to continue after Phil Foden went down under the challenge of Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy during Wednesday evening's game at the Etihad Stadium.

England international Foden was quickly back on his feet but Southampton survived the attack.

Replays of the incident appeared to show that McCarthy got more of the man than the ball as he made a desperate lunge - but VAR (video assistant referee) Andy Madley did not overturn the original decision.

This left plenty of City fans bemused - and they were not the only ones.

Former City defender Joleon Lescott told Sky Sports: “My eyesight must be gone. I just don’t know how that is deemed a 50/50 challenge because Phil Foden’s foot is taken away.

"The fact that he has slipped and the ball doesn’t deviate the other way... I’m surprised that’s not given.”

Former Liverpool midfielder Graeme Souness added: “He’s too honest, Foden. That’s a penalty.

"Listen, the referees back each other up, we know that, so the referee at the game hasn’t given it, so the people sitting at Stockley Park (VAR) don’t give it as a penalty.

"They just make it up as they go along, the refs!”

Southampton were given a penalty in the opening period, which was scored by James Ward-Prowse, after Aymeric Laporte was adjudged to have fouled Jannik Vestergaard in the box from a corner.

However, goals from Kevin De Bruyne, Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan put Pep Guardiola's men 3-1 up at half-time.

Mahrez and De Bruyne struck again after the break, either side of a Che Adams goal for Southampton, to put City 5-2 ahead with half an hour remaining.
