Majority want new political parties set up: Suan Dusit Poll

A majority of people want new political parties to be set up to make way for new people to enter politics, according to the result of an opinion poll conducted by Suan Dusit Rajabhat University, or Suan Dusit Poll.

The poll was carried out on Dec 20-23 on 1,174 people throughout the country to compile their opinions on reports that new political parties - one of them military-backed Pracharat - would be set up ahead of the next general election.

Asked whether they want new political parties to be set up, a majority, 60.57% said "yes", reasoning that they would give the people more choices and open an opportunity for new people to enter politics as they have been fed up with old faces; and 39.43% said "no", saying that the new parties would still comprise old faces.

Asked how they would view new parties designed to support Gen Prayut for prime minister, 53.29% said this would not be good as it would be seen as a perpetuation of power, while 46.71% said it would be good because Gen Prayut is a capable person with strong determination.
