Majority want Lady Cilento Children's Hospital name changed, survey finds

Lady Cilento Children's Hospital opened four years ago.

A decision on the possible renaming of Lady Cilento Children's Hospital in Brisbane will be made in the coming weeks, after an online survey found the majority of respondents wanted it changed.

More than 38,000 people voted in the State Government's online survey, which closed midnight on Friday, with 62 per cent supportive of changing the name to 'Queensland Children's Hospital'.

Queensland Health Minister Steven Miles said it would be a number of weeks before a decision is made.

"Many people also wrote to me or their local MP with feedback about name change. This correspondence will be reviewed over the coming days," he said.

"I will be receiving a formal briefing from Queensland Health and will also consider the survey results and correspondence from individuals and stakeholders before a decision is made in the coming weeks.

"I will also consult with my ministerial colleagues."

The survey opened in late July after Mr Miles was presented with a petitioned signed by almost 900 medical practitioners at the hospital asking for a switch.

They argued the name was confusing, with parents often thinking it was a private facility.

The Children's Hospital Foundation also believes it would help raise more money for medical research from overseas philanthropic and charitable donors.

The hospital opened four years ago and was named after Queensland medical practitioner and author Phyllis Cilento.

A change of name would require alterations to signage on the building, street, helipad and precinct maps in addition to stationery, letterheads and IT systems.

Deputy Opposition Leader Tim Mander previously said LNP wanted the name to remain, and that changing it would be "an absolute joke and a blatant waste of taxpayers' money."
