Majority of South Lanarkshire drivers caught speeding in Rutherglen

More than 3500 drivers were caught speeding on South Lanarkshire’s roads by safety camera’s last year.

Figures released under Freedom of Information laws revealed 3580 drivers were driving over the speed limit in 2018-19 – with one caught driving over 100mph.

In 2017-18, just 1395 drivers were found to be speeding by the area’s safety camera schemes.

However, the vast majority of those caught last year (2,874) were picked up by Rutherglen’s new average speed cameras on the A703 Mill Street.

The highest speed recorded by a speed camera in 2018-19 was 101mph on the A73 near Thankerton.

On Hillhouse Road in Hamilton, one driver was driving at 90mph, the highest recorded in 2017-18.

In 2017-18, just one driver was caught driving over 85mph by a safety camera but that trebled last year.

Over the two years, five drivers were found to be driving 81mph or higher on the A706 between Forth and Lanark near Yieldshields Road.

Before the average speed scheme in Rutherglen went live, 191 drivers were caught speeding by the mobile safety camera on the A703 near Johnstone Drive last year.

In the previous year, 931 drivers had been caught speeding by the mobile camera.

Hillhouse Road in Hamilton saw the next highest number of speeding drivers with 101 caught in 2018-19 compared to just 78 the previous year.

Another 99 drivers were driving over the speed limit on Shawfield Road in Rutherglen last year, down from 144 in the previous year.

In East Kilbride, 26 drivers were caught speeding on Maxwellton Road last year, up from 19 in 2017-18.

In Clydesdale, five separate safety camera schemes caught 213 drivers speeding, up from 127 in 2017-18.

Other cameras in Rutherglen – on the B768 Main Street and Burnhill Street – found 76 drivers speeding, down from 96 in 2017-18.
