Majority of British public believe Boris Johnson should quit over Christmas party row

A majority of the British public believe Boris Johnson should quit over the Downing Street Christmas party scandal.

Around one third of Tory voters also believe the Prime Minister should resign in the wake of the row.

The PM is facing the biggest crisis of his premiership over claims a party was thrown at Number 10 last December during lockdown.

Anger intensified after leaked footage showed staffers laughing about the event at a mock press conference.

Senior Tories, including former Scottish Conservative leader Baroness Davidson, have blasted Johnson over the fiasco.

However, the row also appears to be having cut through with the voters.

A snap poll from Savanta ComRes found that 54 per cent said the PM should resign, including 33 per cent of Tory voters at the 2019 general election.

Around three quarters, 76 per cent, said he should apologise, including 67 per cent of Conservative voters from two years ago.

Three in ten, 29 per cent, said they are less likely to follow government Covid rules as a result of the row.

Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at Savanta ComRes said: "As the Prime Minister continues to refuse to acknowledge the party or admit that there was a breach of Covid guidelines, it’s clear from this poll that the public are taking a dim view of the scandal, with an overwhelming majority saying that the government have let the public, the NHS and, crucially, those who have lost loved ones to Covid, down."

Savanta ComRes interviewed 1,036 UK adults aged 18+ online on 8 December 2021.
