A growing share of Americans believe the Trump administration is going too far in deporting immigrants living in the United States unlawfully, even as most continue to support deportations in some form, according to a new Pew Research Center survey.
The poll found that 53% of U.S. adults say the administration is doing "too much" on deportations, up from 44% in March. At the same time, a large majority still say at least some immigrants living in the country illegally should be deported. Overall, 50% of Americans disapprove of the administration's immigration approach, including 36% who strongly disapprove, while 39% approve.
The shift is evident across partisan and demographic groups according to Pew Research. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters, 86% now say the administration is doing too much on deportations, an 11-point increase since March. Among Republicans and Republican leaners, that share rose to 20%, up seven points.
The gap within the Republican coalition, however, has widened: 47% of Hispanic Republicans say the administration is doing too much, compared with 13% of White Republicans.
Views also diverge sharply over how broadly deportations should be applied. A majority of Republicans (56%) say all immigrants living in the U.S. illegally should be deported, while 39% say some should. Among Democrats, 62% say some should be deported and 30% say none should. Hispanic adults in both parties are more likely than other groups to oppose deportations entirely.
Concerns about personal impact have also increased. Twenty-six percent of adults now say they worry that they, a family member or a close friend could be deported, up from 19% in March. That concern is highest among Latinos, with 52% saying they worry about someone close to them, and 59% reporting that Immigration and Customs Enforcement has conducted arrests or raids in their area.
Other recent polling reflects similar unease. A YouGov survey published in November found that 53% of Americans disapprove of how ICE is doing its job, with about half saying the agency's tactics are too forceful. Separately, a KFF–New York Times poll found that 49% of immigrants say they feel less safe during Trump's second term, while just 19% said they feel safer.
