Leading firm Total Glass falls into administration with majority of 167 staff made redundant

A leading supplier of windows, doors and conservatories has fallen into administration with the majority of its 167 staff made redundant.

Administrators from Grant Thornton were appointed to Merseyside-based Total Glass Ltd this week, and said the company had experienced "heavy losses" in 2019, followed by supply issues in September this year.

Despite surviving the Covid lockdown, the firm was unable to raise funds to recapitalise the business, and it ceased trading at the end of last month.

Sarah O’Toole and Jason Bell of Grant Thornton UK LLP were appointed administrators on Monday by the firm's directors.

Ms O'Toole said: “It is always unfortunate when any redundancies need to be made, but the cessation of trade a number of weeks prior to our appointment, couple with product supply challenges in the sector, significantly limited the prospects of any business sale.

"Our focus now is on supporting the staff affected and the orderly realisation of the assets of the company.”

The business, which employed 167 staff, was founded in 1981, and manufactured and supplied UPVC and aluminium products to the construction and building trade.

Its customer base covered the whole of England, Scotland and Wales, with its clients including private and public sector organisations - many of them blue chip companies.

Operating from Knowsley Business Park in Merseyside and with a turnover of around £25m a year, the firm was a leading supplier of UPVC and aluminium windows, UPVC and composite doors, fire doors, conservatories, curtain walling, screens and communal entrance doors.

While administrators have retained a small number of staff to assist with the administration, they said the "majority" of staff have been made redundant.
