A majority of people are in total disagreement with a proposal for production of pornographic films to be legalised, according to a survey by the National Institute of Development Administration, or Nida Poll.

The poll was conducted by telephone interviews between Nov 22-24 with 1,315 people aged 18 and over of various levels of education and occupations throughout the country.

Asked whether they have ever viewed pornographic publications, 54.14% of respondents said "no", 45.78% said "yes", and 0.08% had no answer or were not interested.

Asked whether they had seen pornographic films, 56.50% said "yes" and 43.50% said "no".

On a proposal for the production of pornographic films to be legalised, 77.04% said they strongly disagreed with it, saying that would cause children and youth to become preoccupied with sex. They said such materials were immoral as Thailand is a Buddhist country, and they could also lead to more sex-related crimes and sexual harassment.

A much smaller number of respondents, 20.53%, agreed with the proposal, saying that people should have the right to produce pornographic films and other materials in the modern era.

The rest, 2.43%, had no answer or were not interested.
