Majorca holidaymakers can use app to help social distancing on most popular beaches

Sunseekers heading to Majorca will be able to download an app that will help maintain social distancing on some of the tourist hotspot's most popular beaches.

Software is being developed to successfully control the number of visitors to favourite spots surrounding the capital Palma.

It is an adaptation of a successful trial that was previously used to manage the flow of cruise passengers around the city, and links to heat sensors that monitor human activity.

The app will then display in real-time which beaches are less crowded and which are at full capacity so that both visitors and residents can make informed decisions about where to go.

Managing director of Palma Tourist Board, Pedro Homar, has revealed the SafeBeaches app will be available to download via android and IOS from July 10.

Meanwhile, the president of Palma and Cala Major’s Hotel Association, Javier Vich, has confirmed that 60 per cent of hotels in the area are anticipated to be open by the end of July with more opening throughout the summer as British visitors flock back to Majorca.

Mr Vich said: “Our hotel sector has been hit significantly by this crisis but we are reassured at the rate of which our properties are reopening and their rapid adaptation of new measures and protocols to ensure the safety of guests and staff.

Tour operators have reported a massive upsurge in the number of booking for holidays to Majorca now UK quarantine restrictions and Spanish travel controls are set to be relaxed.
