Majorca and Ibiza introduce new laws that end pub crawls and happy hours

Majorca and Ibiza are popular locations for Brit tourists in the summer - but this latest news could put some people off.

Authorities in Spain's Balearic Islands are set to crack down on 'booze tourism' in three of its main hotspots.

The local government's new law bans the organisation and promotion of pub crawls and it will also bring an end to promoting alcohol sales - such as "open bars" and "happy hours".

The change in regulation will also mean that all-inclusive hotels will have to impose a limit on the number of drinks they can serve to guests and jumping from hotel balconies into swimming pools will also be prohibited.

For the next five years, it is only Playa de Palma, Magaluf in Majorca, and Ibiza's West End that will be affected by the new rules.

The regulation bans alcohol-selling machines, and shops selling alcohol must close between 8.30pm and 7am in the areas.

'Party boats' are also impacted as new licences have been frozen by the government as well as forbidding them from taking on or offloading revellers in the three areas.

Fines for breaking the new regulation ranges from 6,000 euros (£5,100) to 600,000 euros (£510,000).

The change comes in a bid to clamp down on binge drinking in the popular holiday destinations.
