The Balearic Islands government is cracking down on 'booze tourism' with a new law banning the likes of organised pub crawls, happy hours and party boats.
The new regulations will also mean that all-inclusive hotels will have to impose a limit on the number of drinks they can serve to guests.
However, the rules aren't being rolled out across all of the islands. Instead, they will apply to three regions; Playa de Palma and Magaluf in Majorca, as well as Ibiza's West End.
Although no other regions are currently included, authorities haven't ruled out the possibility of these being applied to other areas.
Under the new rules, organised pub crawls will no longer be allowed to be advertised or held in these regions, while bars and pubs won't be able to host happy hours, which are believed to contribute to visitors' "excessive consumption of alcohol".
As for party boats? These can no longer advertise in the three regions, or drop off/pick up guests at the hotspots.
Other regulations include the limiting of hours when shops can sell alcohol, as well as restrictions on what all-inclusive hotels can serve guests. In regards to all-inclusive holidays, the government had previously considered moves to limit guests' alcohol intake .
The law also encompasses the practice of visitors who jump from balconies into swimming pool; this has been banned due to its dangerous nature (the trend has previously led to a number of tourists' deaths).
Local businesses caught breaking the law could face hefty fines of up to €600,000 (approx £500,000), or could even be shut down for up to three years.
The regulations come into effect this month and are expected to be rolled out for at least five years.
The move comes in a bid to curb the amount of binge drinking which takes place in the holiday hotspots, as well as redefining the reputation of these destinations to become something other than party towns.
