Major wildfire in Vale of Leven as fire crews tackle blaze in record Easter heat

Fire crews battled a major wildfire which broke out in West Dunbartonshire amid record Easter temperatures this evening.

Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed they scrambled to the scene of a large grass fire in Bonhill , Vale of Leven, around 5.25pm.

Photos showed thick plumes of smoke billowing out from a hilltop in West Dunbartonshire.

Firefighters and nine appliances got the fire under control.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "We were in attendance as crews tackled large grass fire near Bornhill in West Dunbartonshire.

Major wildfire breaks out in Lanarkshire as fire crews battle blaze  

"Operations Control mobilised nine appliances to the scene after the alarm was raised at 5.25pm this afternoon."

Earlier crews were battling another blaze in the fields of North Lanarkshire.

Video shows an extensive blaze ripping through fields next to Calderhead Road in  Shotts  after the fire broke out around 3.30pm this afternoon.

Scotland weather record as Easter Monday temperature hits all-time high  

It comes amid a sizzling Easter Monday in Scotland where the mercury rose to 24.2C in Kinlochewe, Wester Ross, beating the previous record of 21.4C in 2014.

The central belt, too, enjoyed similarly warm weather, with 23C recorded in Glasgow and 22.1C in Edinburgh, the Met Office confirmed.
