Major US airport triples ride share fee in effort to combat congestion

  • Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has approved increased fees for ride-hailing and taxi services, raising the current $4 per trip to $6, with up to $12 for direct terminal pick-ups or drop-offs.
  • The new policy eliminates previous exemptions for taxis and limousines, applying the higher charges to all for-hire commercial vehicles, with these additional costs expected to be passed on to passengers.
  • The fee hike aims to alleviate airport congestion and incentivize passengers to utilize the upcoming SkyLink automated people mover, scheduled to launch in late 2026.
  • SkyLink is an elevated train system designed to transport 30 million passengers annually, reducing daily vehicle miles traveled by 117,000, with 47mph trains arriving every two minutes during peak hours.
  • Ride-share companies like Uber and Lyft have criticized the new fees, with Uber stating the $12 pickup fee is the "most expensive in the world" and will significantly impact driver earnings and passenger costs.
