Major update reported as Nottingham Forest search for new manager

Nottingham Forest look set to appoint Steve Cooper as their new manager.

Forest have tonight reportedly agreed compensation with Cooper's former employers, Swansea City, meaning he is set to become Chris Hughton's successor at the City Ground.

The 41-year-old is still contracted to Swansea, despite leaving his role as head coach by mutual consent in July, hence the need for a compensation agreement.

If appointed, Cooper would become Forest's 20th manager since 2011, the club having continued the trend of a change in the dugout at least once every year since Billy Davies' first spell in charge.

Cooper is wanted to turn the Reds' fortunes around after being highly-regarded at the Liberty Stadium.

He led the Welsh club to the Championship play-off final on a modest budget last season before being considered by Premier League club Crystal Palace during their search for a new manager in the summer, which ultimately saw them appoint Patrick Vieira.

Hughton was sacked on Thursday with Forest bottom of the Championship, having lost six of their first seven games.

Chris Wilder was also among the favourites to take over from Hughton at Forest, with initial talks held but the club decided to pursue other managerial options.

Cooper's track record of improving young players at the Liberty Stadium, and previously working with youth teams at the FA, would have no doubt made him particularly attractive to the Forest hierarchy.

Forest currently have 14 members of the first team under the age of 25, including highly-regarded attacker Brennan Johnson - a summer target for Premier League Brentford.
