Major update on plans to close Scottish ice rink announced

A MAJOR update on the plans to permanently close an ice rink in Moray has been announced.

On Monday, the board of Moray Leisure Centre announced its plans to close the Elgin Ice Rink after it concluded it “is no longer financially viable”.

The centre said it had seen its energy costs double, and while reviewing it, the board decided to close the area that generated the least amount of income and consumed the most energy.

However, since Monday’s announcement, the Board of Moray Leisure Centre said it had “worked constructively” with a range of groups and individuals and have now made the decision to make the closure temporary until October 5.

In a statement posted on social media the board said the temporary closure would allow for a “more detailed, solution-focused process to take place”.

It added: “We know this is an incredibly challenging and emotional time.

“The future of the Ice Rink remains uncertain until a new financial and operational model can be developed – one that’s credible, achievable and community-driven.

“We want to sincerely thank clubs, individuals, staff, and elected representatives for your passion, input and support so far. Your voices are helping to shape what comes next.”

The board confirmed that a “small independent” working group will be formed in the coming weeks to help lead the process and that they are supporting staff who will be affected by the temporary closure.

The rink will close from Monday, August 4.

Moray MSP Richard Lochhead said: “On the one hand a two-month closure is better than a permanent closure, however feedback from the users is that this still poses real challenges for them trying to organise competitions and training for their members.

“There is also the fear that if the doors close temporarily they won't reopen.”
