Major UK motorway blocked after car bursts into flames during rush hour

Delays are expected this morning after a car burst onto flames on a major UK motorway.

Tailbacks are already forming on the M4 eastbound carriageway around Newport after a vehicle burst into flames at around 7am, this morning, May 3.

According to Wales Online, the fire has been extinguished but two lanes are closed from junction 25 to junction 24, with severe congestion in the area.

An image from the scene shows smoke billowing into the air as the vehicle is enveloped by flames. Two of the three lanes along the motorway remain closed.

The travel monitoring service Inrix say that travel time is now one hour and 20 minutes.

Traffic Wales also advise that long delays from the fire are also impacting the A470 southbound carriageway between Pontypridd and Nantgarw.

Police urge drivers to find alternative routes as emergency services tackle the incident
