Major UEFA decision clears path for Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes

UEFA have paved the way for the Premier League to complete their season and give Liverpool the opportunity to claim the title.

The European governing body held a videoconference meeting on Wednesday with the general secretaries of 55 UEFA member associations to discuss their latest steps amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Among the decisions made was the postponement of all UEFA competition matches, including the Champions League and Europa League, until further notice.

It was also determined that all deadlines relating to the qualification for next season’s UEFA club competitions – with Liverpool already qualified for the Champions League – would be postponed, with new dates set in due course.

And that has given domestic leagues, including the Premier League, greater room in which to attempt to formulate a plan to complete their current campaigns without a fixed deadline for European competition to also consider.

Liverpool stand a record 25 points clear at the summit and require just six points from their remaining nine games to lift the championship for the first time in 30 years.

The Premier League has been suspended until April 30, although it is widely acknowledged that date will be extended significantly with Reds skipper Jordan Henderson admitting it could be “a few more months at least” before games resume.

UEFA have also announced the special circumstances due to the coronavirus outbreak mean they will be relaxing Financial Fair Play rules for participation in next season’s European competitions.

However, the Executive Committee “reiterated its full commitment to club licensing and financial fair play” while giving clubs and member associations more time to complete the required licensing process.

The decision to postpone all UEFA competition matches in June also means internationals due to be played have been postponed until a later date, fixtures which included rearranged play-off matches for next summer’s European Championships.
