Major transformation of Merchant City moves forward as council gives green light

A major transformation of Glasgow's Merchant City is one step closer to reality after it was given the go-ahead by city planners.

The new development, Candleriggs Square, will span over Trongate, Hutcheson Street, Wilson Street and Brunswick Street/Lane and will be completed in phases.

Phase one will see the construction of The Student Hotel with nearly 500 rooms on the block bounded by Hutcheson Street, Trongate and Brunswick Street.

The Student Hotel will feature long-term accommodation, a restaurant, bar, business centre, auditorium, gym and a shop

Next door will be 350 build-to-rent apartments and shops on the ground floor.

The flats will have a landscaped courtyard and a range of roof terraces.

Three other plots will be suitable for offices, flats or hotels with restaurants, pubs and shops.

The site of the development has been home to various warehouses and tenements since the 1700s, becoming more commercialised by the early 20th century.

It was last in use as The Goldberg’s department store and subsequently Weisfelds clothing store in the 1950s and 1990s respectively. The Weisfelds was closed down in 1999.

Plans to bring the Trongate and Candleriggs districts of  Merchant City  back to life were given the green light by  Glasgow City Council  in November 2017.
