Major traffic delays after person hit by lorry

A major road is closed in both directions after a pedestrian was struck by a lorry, police have confirmed.

The incident occurred in Park Road, Ormskirk , outside the Morrison's store, earlier this afternoon, reports Lancs Live .

Lancashire Police said the road is closed between the junctions with Aughton Street and St Helens Road.

Traffic has been backed up as emergency services work at the scene.

UPDATE: Police have confirmed a local woman has died following the crash.

A tweet from Ormskirk Police said: "St Helens road on the junction of Small lane and the one way system are all closed off.

"Anyone planning on accessing Ormskirk town centre are advised to find alternative routes."

Arriva tweeted that the 310 service is being diverted to Liverpool Park road via St Helens Liverpool Road/Long Lane.

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: “We have attended but it is a police incident so any more details will come from them.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Constabulary told LancsLive: “We were called to a serious RTC, between a lorry and a pedestrian. The road is closed in both directions.”

Burscough police said: "Due to a road traffic accident Park Road Ormskirk has been closed in both directions outside Morrisons. “We will inform you when it has re -opened.”

A sign at the scene said officers were used aerial drones to investigate the scene.
