Major Six Nations change announced at Principality Stadium as almost every bar no longer accepts cash

The Principality Stadium will be practically a cashless venue during the Six Nations.

On February 1 visitors will see the stadium make a significant move towards becoming completely cashless as Wales take on Italy in Cardiff for the first Six Nations game.

Over the years the stadium has seen an increase in the use of card payments at the point of purchase across its 65 food and beverage (F&B) units.

And from this Saturday, fans will only be able to buy alcohol using cash at three stalls in the entire stadium, all of which will be located behind the posts in the south stand.

Just five food stalls will accept cash, three of which are in the south stand, with one in the west stand and another in the BT stand.

Stadium bosses say the shift is in response to customer purchasing habits as customers get increasingly comfortable making contactless payments.

In 2018, the number of contactless payments made in the UK increased by 31% and, according to independent survey by Transaction Network Survey, 68% of consumers said they rarely used cash.

Officials predict the increase in cashless units at the stadium will quicken service and shorten waiting time, helping to prevent fans from missing out on crucial moments while they wait for drinks.

The map below show where these are:

Discussing the new plan, Tracey Maxwell, General Manager of the Principality Stadium Experience, said: "We have never felt the need to enforce cashless at Principality Stadium, preferring to be led by our consumers.

"Once they felt comfortable with a variety of payment methods and it’s clear that the number of card payments has increased, we have converted more units."

All F&B units support the following payment methods: Visa, Visa Electron, Maestro, Mastercard, Applepay and Android Pay.

The units can be found around the concourses on each level of the stadium.

There are also a number of water fountains throughout the stadium that people are able to use, and tap water is free across all bars.

Last summer a permanent Alcohol Free Zone was introduced and set up at the Principality Stadium’s north stand for supporters who wish to visit the stadium without drinking alcohol.
