Emergency services suspend search for missing girl in Thames

A major search for a girl who went missing in the River Thames in Kent has been suspended.

Emergency services were called after two children got into difficulty in the water near Royal Terrace Pier in Gravesend on Friday afternoon.

HM Coastguard said they were alerted to the incident at around 1.35pm. A boy was pulled from the water and taken to a local hospital for treatment, Kent Police said.

The search for the second child, a girl, continued for several hours but has since been suspended, HM Coastguard confirmed.

Kent Police said they were called by the Port of London Authority at 1.46pm to reports of concerns for the welfare of two people who had entered the river at Royal Pier Road.

The children’s parents have been informed, the force told the Standard.

They explained that officers, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the RNLI and South East Coast Ambulance Service were at the scene helping to search.

Metropolitan Police boats were also at the scene.

A spokesperson for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: “SECAmb were called at approx. 13:40 today (30/05/25) to concerns for the welfare of two people who had entered the river at Royal Pier Road in Gravesend.

“Crews attended the scene, and a male patient was assessed and treated before being taken to a local hospital for further medical treatment. Please contact Kent Police and HM Coastguard for further information.”

The incident comes two days after police found a body in the search for a missing teenage girl who fell into a reservoir from a dam in West Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called to Baitings Dam near Ripponden at 1.17pm on Wednesday, with underwater searches continuing throughout Thursday before a body was found in the afternoon.

West Yorkshire Police said a formal identification process is yet to take place, but it is believed to be the girl’s body. Her family have been made aware.

Last month, police also confirmed that the body of a missing 11-year-old girl had been found in the River Thames.

Kaliyah Coa had been playing with another young girl and boy on a school inset day when she slipped into the Thames, near Barge House Causeway close to London City Airport, on March 31, sparking a two-week search.

Her family were left heartbroken by her tragic death, explaining that she “went to a birthday party and never returned home”.
