Despite their best efforts, officers said the man was quickly taken downstream by a strong current.

Following the incident, a major search and rescue operation was launched with units from Clare County Fire and Rescue Services from Ennis station.

Working alongside them were the specially trained swift water rescue technicians while the National Ambulance Service also sent paramedics and a rapid response advanced paramedic unit to help out.

The Irish Coast Guard was notified and the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter was brought in.

Clare Civil Defence also mobilised resources including their water search team as well as volunteers from the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard.

The fire service deployed their inflatable rescue boat and commenced a search of the man's last-known location.

After three hours of searching, the operation was stood down late last night, only to resume again this morning.
