Major search operation followed report of person in the water near the Forth Bridge

A major search operation was carried out following reports of a person in the water near the Forth Bridge last night.

The HM Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter was out conducting an "extensive" search operation along with lifeboat teams from Kinghorn, South Queensferry and Fisherrow.

Teams were alerted to a person possibly being in trouble in the water shortly after 10pm, however after looking for around two hours they were unable to trace anyone.

RNLI Queensferry Lifeboat also fired white parachute flares in a bid to illuminate the search area.

A number of people took to social media to report the sight of search helicopters sweeping the Forth.

A spokesperson for the Maritime & Coastguard Agency said: "At 10.10pm yesterday (22 April) HM Coastguard received a report of a person in the water near the Forth Bridge.

"Kinghorn, South Queensferry and Fisherrow Coastguard Rescue Teams, HM Coastguard Search and Rescue helicopter based at Prestwick and RNLI South Queensferry inshore lifeboat were sent to assist with the search.

"Following an extensive search and no trace of anyone in the water, all teams were stood down around 1am."
