Major route into city closed after crash on Great George Street

A major road in the city centre is currently closed after a car crash.

Great George Street in the city centre which leads to Upper Parliament Street, Toxteth and Chinatown is currently closed to traffic.

The crash is believed to have happened at around 8pm this evening during the River of Light festival which saw thousands of people flock to the Pier Head. 

A large emergency services presence is visible with two ambulances on scene and a number of police vehicles surrounding a dark coloured BMW.

Merseyside Police tweeted about the incident and said: "ROAD CLOSED - Motorists please be aware that Great George Street #Liverpool is currently closed to traffic following an RTC. 

"Emergency Services are in attendance and dealing. Please avoid the area at this time and plan your journeys accordingly. #DriveSafe"

Merseyside Police said they did not have any information related to injuries when contacted by the ECHO.
