Major roadworks on M74 will see disruption for Lanarkshire motorists this month

A £500k road upgrade will see disruption for Lanarkshire drivers this month.

Amey, on behalf of Transport Scotland as part of the Network Management Contract for the South-West Trunk Road Unit, is undertaking essential maintenance on the M74 northbound.

The work will be between Strathaven Road underbridge and Draffan Road underbridge from Wednesday, July 20, until Tuesday, July 26.

This project will benefit around 26,000 vehicles using this route each day, by improving the condition of the carriageway and reducing the need for more extensive maintenance in the future.

The work has been rescheduled following its cancellation in February due to adverse weather.

Traffic management will be in place for the duration and will include various phases of traffic management utilising road closures, contraflow operations, restricted lanes and temporary speed restrictions.

The traffic management programme is as follows:

  • From 8pm on July 20 until 6am on July 21 - Full southbound closure between Junctions 8 and 10 with the northbound carriageway reduced to one lane in order to undertake preparatory works for temporary road markings and make safety barrier alterations.
  • From 6am on July 21 until 8pm on July 25 - Road layout of the southbound carriageway will be altered between Junctions 8 and 10 with the hard shoulder running as narrow lanes and a 40mph speed limit in place.
  • From 8pm on July 21 until 6am on July 22 - Full southbound closure between Junctions 8 and 10 with the northbound carriageway reduced to one lane.
  • From 8pm on July 22 until 6am on July 23 - Full northbound closure between Junctions 10 and 8.
  • From 6am on July 23 until 8pm July 24 - A contraflow will be in place utilising one lane northbound and two lanes on the southbound carriageway. The on-slip road at Junction 10 will be closed throughout this contraflow period. A local signed diversion will be in place with traffic diverted via the B7078 to Junction 8.
  • From 8pm on July 24 until 6am on July 25 - Full northbound closure between Junctions 10 and 8 to complete the works and remove the contraflow.
  • From 8pm on July 25 until 6am July 26 - Following completion of all phases, temporary road markings will be removed and the original marking reinstated. Full southbound closure required between Junctions 8 and 10 with the northbound carriageway reduced to one lane.

The diversion routes for full carriageway closures will see M74 southbound traffic diverted at Junction 8 to join the A71 westbound to Canderside Toll Roundabout.

At the roundabout, traffic will take the first exit onto the B7078 southbound and at Wellburn Interchange, will take the second exit to re-join the M74 southbound at Junction 10.

M74 northbound traffic will follow the same diversion route but in reverse.

Access for emergency service vehicles will be maintained throughout the works.

Amey says all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled and in the event of adverse weather impacting these works, there may be requirement for additional overnight closures.
