Major roadworks are on the way in Hamilton

Major improvement works are to take place at two important junctions in Hamilton.

The traffic signal controlled junction at Strathaven Road/Annsfield Road will be enhanced and remodelled, and the mini roundabout will be removed at the junction of Sherry Drive and Woodfoot Road with new traffic signals installed. This will increase capacity at both junctions.

This increased capacity is necessary to manage the traffic generated by the new Hamilton Community Growth Area which will deliver up to 1800 new homes over the next decade.

The major infrastructure improvement projects are part of the £1.13 billion Glasgow City Region City Deal.

These works form part of a five-year programme of network improvements funded by City Deal to maximise the economic benefits of the Community Growth Area in Hamilton.

RJ McLeod (Contractors) Ltd have been awarded the contract for these works.

Advance public utility diversion works are scheduled to commence adjacent to the Strathaven Road/Annsfield Road junction on 5 August 2019 with diversion works continuing into the road the following week. Following the diversion works the main contract works will commence and are expected to be completed by early October.

Works at Sherry Drive/Woodfoot Road will begin on completion of the works at Strathaven Road/Annsfield Road and are expected to be completed by the end of December.

There will be a requirement for traffic management with associated lane closures and temporary traffic signals.

Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, Councillor John Anderson, said: “As always, we will of course make every effort to minimise disruption for residents, road users and local businesses.

“However, some disruption will be inevitable and we would ask people to be patient and to look forward to the benefits this project will deliver.”
