Major road to have speed limit reduced for up to 18 months

A major Merseyside road is set to have the speed limit changed for up to 18 months during roadworks.

A stretch of Marine Drive in Southport is set to have the speed limit changed from 50mph to 30mph after Merseyside Police raised concerns for motorists safety.

The road will undergo works after it was noted that it had "suffered further subsidence", with work set to begin in February 2022.

Mark Brislen, a traffic management officer, wrote in his road traffic collision intelligence report: "At various locations both carriageway at this location has suffered further subsidence resulting in road users being unable to pass along it safely at and/or near the posted 50 mph limit.

"Particularly prevalent when travelling north. Lower riding vehicles or motorcycles carrying pillions are at risk on bottoming out with the potential for a loss of control leading to damage and/or injury"

The proposal that has been approved said: "In order to address the concerns of Merseyside Police, it is proposed to introduce a temporary 30mph speed limit, on Marine Drive, from its junction with Marshside Road, for a distance of 350m in a north-easterly direction, which will operate for a maximum of 18 months or until the works are complete, whichever is the sooner."

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: "Alongside our partners in Merseyside Police, we have identified the need to carry out a rolling programme of resurfacing works on Marine Drive, between the Plough Roundabout and Marshside Road.

"These works, which will aim to improve the condition of the carriageway for the ongoing safety of road users, especially motorbike users, will commence in February 2022.

"In the months leading up to and during the works, we will be implementing a temporary 20mph reduction in the speed limit until such time as the works are completed."

Marine Drive saw a motorcyclist suffer "life changing" injuries earlier this year.

The man in his 30s was involved in a crash on July 20 that saw him fighting for his life after being airlifted to Aintree hospital from the scene.
