A major route into Bury town centre was closed this morning after a car burst into flames.

Firefighters were called to Bolton Road shortly before 11.30am.

The road was shut in both directions for about 20 minutes while fire crews dealt with the incident.

No one was injured and firefighters say there are not believed to be any 'suspicious circumstances'.

Steve Coot, watch manager at Whitefield Fire Station, said: "The driver did the right thing.

"They smelled something burning, so pulled over and got out of the vehicle.

"The car was fully involved in flames when we got there.

"We had to close the road for about 20 minutes, but worked quickly to reopen it."

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service added: “At 11.25am on Wednesday, 21 October, firefighters were called to a fire involving a Vauxhall Corsa on Bolton Road, in Bury.

“One fire engine from Whitefield quickly attended.

"Firefighters used breathing apparatus and a hose reel to extinguish the fire and were in attendance for around an hour.”
