Major road set to close for second time in 12 months

A main road in Merseyside is set to close again for the second time in 12 months.

Marine Drive in Southport is set to close for three months next year for resurfacing works.

This comes after another portion of the road was closed this year for resurfacing.

In a report from Sefton Council, it cited the road as "uneconomical".

The council said: "Overtime, the condition of the road surface has deteriorated, which has affected its ride quality and the safe discharge of surface water from the carriageway, despite best efforts to try and maintain its structural integrity through routine repairs and the application of preventative type surface treatments which are now considered uneconomical."

It has been proposed that the work starts on January 25 next year, and that the works will "restrict" movement of people travelling through the area.

The report said: "The section of Marine Drive between Hesketh Road and Marshside Road has already been treated and it now proposed to treat the length between Marshside Road and Preston New Road next.

"The section between Fairway and Hesketh Drive is then likely to be programmed for treatment during early 2023.The works to be undertaken will involve the reconstruction of both footway and carriageway and the installation of a new and improved drainage system.

"To expedite the works and to carry out operations safely, a road closure needs to be implemented from the 25th January 2022, that will restrict the movement of pedestrians and motor vehicles through working areas for up to 3 months."

The plans to close the road were approved, with the council deciding that "the temporary closure of Marine Drive, Southport be approved; and the necessary legal procedures, including those of public consultation and advertising the Council’s intention to implement the Order, be approved."

This approval comes after Merseyside Police submitted a report that cited the danger of the road and recommended the road have its speed limit slashed from 50mph to 30mph.

Marine Drive saw a motorcyclist suffer "life changing" injuries earlier this year.

The man in his 30s was involved in a crash on July 20 that saw him fighting for his life after being airlifted to Aintree hospital from the scene.

A Sefton Council spokesperson told the ECHO earlier this year: "Alongside our partners in Merseyside Police, we have identified the need to carry out a rolling programme of resurfacing works on Marine Drive, between the Plough Roundabout and Marshside Road.

"These works, which will aim to improve the condition of the carriageway for the ongoing safety of road users, especially motorbike users, will commence in February 2022.

"In the months leading up to and during the works, we will be implementing a temporary 20mph reduction in the speed limit until such time as the works are completed."
