Major road remains closed by police after crash involving car and lorry

A section of a busy Merseyside road remains closed after a crash involving a car and a lorry.

The junction of Church Road and Hawthorne Road in Litherland saw a huge emergency service response, with police closing the road from the junction, up to School Lane.

Merseyside Police confirmed they received a report of a collision involving a Ford Fiesta and a lorry at around 2.40pm.

A police spokeswoman told the ECHO : "A woman in her 70s has suffered minor injuries and will be taken to hospital as a precaution.

"Road closures are in place on Church Road and motorists are advised to avoid the area."

Firefighters were also at the scene, and used hydraulic equipment to remove the roof and door of the car.

Paramedics took a woman to hospital at around 4.10pm.

One woman at the scene told the ECHO: "I know it's a busy junction but I've never seen this many fire, police and ambulances."

The road is used by many drivers each day, and is a main access point for Dunnings Bridge Road, Switch Island and the motorway.

Traffic and travel information site Inrix says the road remains closed and there is congestion to A565 Crosby Road South.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area where possible, and a police cordon remains in place.
