Major road into Liverpool blocked by fallen tree

A fallen tree has closed a major road in Merseyside this morning.

Southport Road in Bootle is currently closed northbound due to the fallen tree. The tree has blocked the road from Aintree Road to Burnie Avenue and traffic is said to be coping well.

The large tree also appears to have caused damage to a lamp post which is leaning over on Southport Road. Photos show police at the scene, where traffic is able to access the southbound side of the road as usual.

The incident comes after the heatwave came to an end, with heavy rain forecast for later today. Traffic monitoring site Inrix said: "A5038 Southport Road Northbound closed due to fallen tree from A5098 Aintree Road to Burnie Avenue. Traffic is coping well."
