Major road closed while RSPCA and firefighters rescue deer trapped in garden

A major road in Salford was closed while firefighters and RSPCA officers rescued a deer which had become trapped in a backgarden.

They cornered the roe deer before covering his head with a pillowcase 'to stop him panicking' during the rescue.

A section of the A6 near Worsley was closed during the rescue, which happened at 12pm on Monday.

RSPCA animal welfare officer Steve Wickham, wearing a buoyancy suit, then carried the deer to safety along with two firefighters.

The deer was then set free at Ellesmere Golf Club.

Steve said: “The deer had been hopping over the gardens of a number of homes but there was nowhere else for him to go and we were worried if he panicked he would run out onto the A6 and that could obviously be dangerous to motorists.

"So the road was shut for half an hour for safety reasons while the rescue was made.

"The deer was released nearby and gratefully ran away after his ordeal.

"Over the years the fire service has assisted us in many rescues and we are always grateful to them for the help and support they give us."
