Major road closed after severe flooding hits from burst water main

A major road in the region remains closed for a second day as emergency services tackle severe flooding caused by a burst water main.

A five mile stretch of the A38 is closed and emergency roadworks have been put in place on the southbound carriageway between Branston to Alrewas.

The burst water main caused torrents of water to pour onto the road, forcing traffic to turn back or brave the conditons.

The closure may last for several days while repairs are carried out.

The incident was reported at 6.15am on Saturday, May 25, Derbyshire Live reports.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "We have an emergency roadworks closure on the A38 southbound from Branston to Alrewas including the entry slips at Branston, Barton Turn and Catholme due to a burst water main.

"South Staffs Water is aware and dealing."

It means motorists should continue to avoid the stretch and seek alternative routes.

It is also advised football fans travelling to Wembley for the Championship play-off final between Aston Villa and Derby County on Monday, May 27, are advised to allow for extra travel time.

Photographs and footage taken by motorists show the scale of the burst with vehicles trying to get through causing tidal wave effects.

The flood affected water supplies across East Staffordshire.

The Waterfront at Barton Marina was forced to temporarily close. It later reopened but was only able to sell drinks.

Residents in Catholme were also badly affected with one claiming a nearby Co-op had run out of bottled water.

However, she later added staff from South Staffs Water had handed bottles to some of its more vulnerable customers.

Motorists were experiencing up to an hour's delay between Barton under Needwood and Alrewas on Saturday and the closure was then extended to Branston.

As those on a Bank Holiday getaway are urged to seek alternative routes, South Staffs Water said the closure may last for several days.

It is not yet known how long the southbound carriageway will be completely closed for.

The spokesman previously said traffic management will stay in place, with one lane open either side for a few days until the road and the central reservation is reinstated.

South Staffordshire Water has had to rip up the road to make way for repairs which could lead to an extended closure.

Midland Classic confirmed many of its services using the A38 have had to take alternative routes with some not able to service Barton Turn and Barton Marina.
