Major road closed after serious crash leaves cyclist in hospital

A cyclist is in hospital with serious injuries after a crash closed a main road.

The incident occurred shortly after 6.30am on Thursday, on the A49 Winwick Road between Cromwell Avenue and junction nine of the M62.

Police were called to the scene of the crash, which involved a car and a cyclist near to the Motormill car showroom.

The cyclist is believed to have sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The driver of the car, a 41-year-old local man, has been arrested on suspicion of drug driving and possession of a class A drug.

Winwick Road was closed northbound as a result of the incident, with drivers being advised to avoid the area.

It has now been reopened.

A spokesperson from Cheshire Police said: "Shortly after 6.30am police were called to reports of a collision on the A49 Winwick Road, between Cromwell Avenue and junction nine of the M62.

"Officers attended the scene and found there had been a collision between a car and a cyclist near to Motormill car showroom.

"The cyclist is believed to have sustained serious injuries and has been taken to hospital.

"The diver of the car, a 41-year-old local man, has been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including drug driving and possession of a Class A drug.

"The road was closed northbound as a result of the incident, but reopened at 11am.

"Anyone with any information in relation to the collision is asked to contact Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML-709844."
