Major revamp of popular Turn Moss pavilion in Stretford set to begin

A project to refurbish the pavilion at Turn Moss playing fields in Stretford is set to start in a matter of days.

The scheme to revamp the changing room facility is being jointly funded by Trafford council and The Football Foundation as part of the local authority’s investment plans.

Last year, Trafford council’s executive approved Turn Moss’s protected status as a village green after campaigners fought for years to stop development on the land, with community group the Friends of Turn Moss leading the way.

The green space has been used for organised football matches for almost 70 years.

The Friends of Turn Moss group successfully secured £10,000 from the council’s social investment fund to diversify the space, particularly for families and children back in July 2020.

The improvements being made to the changing pavilion now include: four new refurbished changing rooms, two new referee rooms, a new spectator toilet, a disabled shower room with toilet and four new bike stands.

The work is expected to take approximately 16 weeks and the main contractor, Thomas Kershaw Builders, said they are ‘committed to minimising the level of disruption as much as possible for local residents’.

Coun Liz Patel, Trafford council’s executive member for culture and leisure, said: “The changing rooms at Turn Moss have been in a poor condition for many years and I am really pleased that we are carrying out this work to refurbish them to a top standard. Hundreds of people of all ages use the changing rooms for sporting activities at Turn Moss and this work will be of huge benefit to them.

“Health and well-being is a big priority for Trafford council and this project will support that priority by providing changing facilities that will be used well into the future by different generations.”

If you have any comments regarding the work, please email the council at turnmosschangingrooms@trafford.gov.uk. This email address is for general enquiries in relation to the changing room project only and will be monitored Monday to Friday between 10am – 4pm.
