Major rescue launched after man falls 10m into river at Stockport beauty spot

A Stockport beauty spot became the focus of a major rescue operation after a man fell down an embankment into a river.

Rescue crews were scrambled to Etherow Country Park in Romiley just after 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

A man - whose age is not yet known - is said to have tumbled 10 metres into the River Etherow below.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said he managed to get out of the water by himself, but then became stuck on the bank.

Specialist fire and ambulance crews were sent down to help the stranded man who was reportedly conscious and breathing.

It is understood he suffered back injuries. The air ambulance was also drafted in and a spokesman for NWAS said at 6.20pm crews were preparing to take him to hospital.

It is unclear whether this was by road or helicopter.
