Major renovation for Coatbridge sheltered housing complex

Residents at a Coatbridge sheltered housing complex are set to benefit from a £1.9 million renovation project.

Work is under way at Dundyvan Gardens on improvements including new landscaped gardens incorporating family spaces, a hairdressing facility and additional common room spaces.

There will also be safety features including dementia-friendly colour-coded doors and frames, plus a new dedicated area where tenants can charge their mobility scooters.

Cameron Barr of North Lanarkshire Council said: “Before any work was carried out, we spoke with residents explaining the nature of the work and how this would be done.

“Our contractor, Ashwood Construction, has taken the needs of tenants into account – one way they are doing this is to carry out the work in small phases to reduce any stress from noise, vibration or disruption.

“Everyone is very excited by the plans and it’s the talk of the complex! The renovation will deliver a fabulous environment for our tenants to enjoy with their families and friends, bringing a real sense of community to Dundyvan Gardens.”

The safety upgrades include fire detection measures as well as the replacement of all flat doors and frames with new colour-coded versions, which is both dementia-friendly and helps people with visual impairments.

Additional family areas and benches are being created in the newly-landscaped garden, to ensure “residents can enjoy being outdoors in fresh air and use the area to its full potential”; while the complex’s existing common areas are being extended and two new ones created.

Council officials say that the work “should help contribute to a safe, warm and friendly living environment for the tenant” and will “provide a modern and inspiring homely environment for residents and their families to enjoy”.

New fire doors and the early decoration elements of the project will take place in the coming months, and the project will be completed by next summer.
