Major probe launched into Scots 999 chiefs' camper van firm

A probe has been launched into senior ambulance service managers running a camper van rental firm from the same building as their HQ.

The Sunday Mail revealed last week that staff were operating the £8000-a-month “side hustle” while 999 crews coped with a call-out crisis.

Seven key officials have been working on the business at an office next to Glasgow Airport – which also houses the crucial mobile Covid testing hub where they are employed.

Calls to the camper van business appeared to be answered by at least one member of staff during working hours.

The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) said: “An investigation is under way in relation to the allegations made in a newspaper.”

Billy Kinniburgh, SAS head of planning and delivery, answered the Camper Vans Scotland line and returned calls to set up camper van viewing on his mobile.

SAS strategic operations boss Derek Loughery, who was not on shift at the time, showed our undercover reporter a £69,000 VW Grand California van in the car park of the Inospace building at Glasgow Airport.

The SAS insisted Camper Vans Scotland staff were involved in the selection of space at Inospace for their Covid response hub, adding: “We rent the space from NHS24 who advised us an area was to become vacant. The decision was approved by the SAS Executive Team.”
