Major probe launched after 'suspicious' fire at Grangemouth Sports Complex

A major police probe has been launched after a fire broke out at Grangemouth Sports Complex forcing the building to be evacuated.

The blaze ripped through toilets within the building causing extensive damage to the site on Abbots Road in Grangemouth.

Emergency services - including three fire engines - rushed to the scene shortly after 6:30pm last night, Monday December, 6.

The whole building was evacuated with gym goers and swimmers forced to stand out in the freezing wind and rain.

An investigation into the incident is now underway and officers want to hear from anyone who witnessed anything suspicious.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 7pm on Monday, 6 December, we were made aware of a fire at a premises in Abbots Road, Grangemouth.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who saw anything suspicious is asked to contact us on 101, quoting incident number 2833 of Monday, 6 December."

Firefighters - using breathing apparatus - were at the scene for well over an hour.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 6.41pm on Monday, December 6 by an automated fire alarm system at Grangemouth Sports Complex.

"Operations Control mobilised three fire engines and firefighters extinguished a fire in a toilet.

"There were no reported casualties and crews left after ensuring the area was made safe."

Grangemouth Sports Complex is closed today, and is expected to remain closed until the fire damage is assessed.

A Falkirk Community Trust spokesperson said: "Falkirk Fire & Rescue Service responded to a fire on Monday evening (6th December) at Grangemouth Sports Complex.

"The building was evacuated and the fire contained. Staff and customers followed safety procedures and all exited the building without harm.

"Due to smoke damage, Grangemouth Sports Complex remains closed for cleaning, restoration and safety checks.

"Customers who have paid for classes or other services that cannot be delivered whilst the building remains closed will be contacted directly.

"The reopening date for the Grangemouth Complex will be communicated via our social media channels and website once confirmed."
