Major power cut leaves Edinburgh in the dark as outage affects thousands of homes in the city

A major power cut left Edinburgh in darkness tonight as thousands of homes were left without power.

The city fell dark around 9pm this evening as properties felt the effects of the power outage for over an hour.

While most homes are now with power, it may be into the early hours of the morning before every house hit by the power cut gets power back.

Residents also reported being unable to use their mobile phones as their cell phone coverage was affected.

SP Energy Networks tweeted to customers just after 10pm to say that power should have been restored.

The Tweet said: "Supplies have been restored to customers affected by #POWERCUT #Edinburgh #Lothians.

"If your power is not back on please check and reset your trip switches. Thank you for your patience today."

Engineers were able to restore power remotely and are currently investigating the cause.

Initially the energy firm posted saying: "We are aware of a #POWERCUT in #EDINBURGH #LOTHIANS.

"Our engineers are working to restore supplies. Sorry for the inconvenience."
