Major power cut hits Stanley as 1,500 homes left without electricity

Hundreds of homes and businesses were left without electricity in County Durham.

An unexpected power cut led to 1,523 properties being left without power at around 8am on Thursday morning.

Premises in the DH9 area were affected - including Stanley and Beamish.

Northern Powergrid engineers arrived on the scene with the majority of homes and businesses having their electricity back by 9.30am.

A Northern Powergrid spokesman said: "There was an unexpected power cut affecting 1,523 properties in the DH9 area.

"Good news, your power should now be back on. Thanks for your patience during the power cut."
